"The doctor of the future will give no medicine, but will interest her or his patients in the care of the human frame, in a proper diet, and in the cause and prevention of disease."

Weekly Health Update:

Mental Attitude
Fight Fears During Sleep. Fifteen healthy volunteers received mild electric shocks while they were shown two different faces and smelled two different odors in order to associate each face and odor combination with a fear sensation. During sleep, the odor associated with one face was released into the sleeping area. When volunteers
awoke and were shown both faces, their fear measured lower when they viewed the face corresponding to the odor they were exposed to the night before. Fear was measured with functional MRI and sweat readings. This research may lead to new strategies for combating phobias.

Health Alert
Copper Bracelets and Magnetic Wrist Straps Not Effective for Rheumatoid Arthritis.  Over a five month period, 70 patients with rheumatoid arthritis wore four different devices promoted as treatments for their arthritis and one placebo bracelet. They were asked to report pain, disability, and medication use. Blood analysis was also performed to monitor inflammation. The results showed that magnetic wrist straps and copper bracelets provide no
therapeutic benefit compared to the placebo bracelets.

Exercise
Combined Exercise and Diet Help Knee Arthritis. Researchers analyzed 454 overweight and obese people over the age of 54 who also suffered from knee osteoarthritis. A diet and exercise program was implemented and the results suggest that intensive weight loss may have an anti-inflammatory and biomechanical benefit, with greater results when diet and exercise are combined rather than undertaken separately.

Chiropractic
Neck Radiculopathy Resolves. The cervical radiculopathy of a 55-year-old patient with an MRI-confirmed C6-7 disk protrusion resolved following chiropractic treatment.  At a three year follow-up, his symptoms had not returned.

Wellness/Prevention
Marriage Important for Cancer Survival. A retrospective analysis of over 700,000 people revealed that cancer patients who were unmarried or widowed were 17% more likely to suffer from metastatic cancer when compared to married cancer patients. Unmarried patients were also 53% less likely to receive the appropriate therapy for their cancer and their cancer was more likely to be diagnosed at a later stage.
