Using data from the California Healthy Kids Survey, researchers found that teens who experienced just one military deployment of a family member were 40% more likely to feel sad or hopeless, 24% more likely to have suicidal thoughts, and 15% were more likely to be depressed than teens with no family members in the military. FDA Wants To Eliminate Use of Trans Fats. The Food and Drug Administration is moving to label partially hydrogenated oils (trans fats) as “not generally recognized as safe” for use in food. Trans fats have been removed from many processed foods over the years but are still found in foods such as margarine, microwave popcorn, and some desserts. FDA commissioner Dr. Margaret A. Hamburg says that eliminating trans fats could prevent 20,000 heart attacks and 7,000 deaths from heart disease each year.

Protect Your Hearing. Many people consider hearing loss to be a normal part of the aging process but new research finds this may not always be the case. An analysis of 20 years of data on nearly 70,000 women found that females who are overweight (BMI = 30-35) have a 17% greater risk of hearing loss compared to women with a healthy weight (BMI = 20-25). Furthermore, women who walk two or more hours per week are 15% less likely to suffer hearing loss than women who walk under one hour per week on average.
